In 1968, Jonny graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Chadron State College. He came from a family history of educators. He enjoyed the flexible time in the summer to travel. He would often travel across North America and Central American to study in many different education disciplines. Jonny achieved his Master’s in Curriculum for University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1991.
Jonny dedicated his entire teaching career, 31 years, to the students at Grand Island Public Schools. He taught Social Studies and English and was the Student Council Advisor for 11 years. During his life, Jonny has influenced hundreds of young people through his teaching and work with Trinity Lutheran Church. After Jonny left GIPS, he spent 8 years, managing mission trips and programs as the Director of Missions for Trinity Lutheran Church.
Even though Jonny has been retired since 2007, and now resides at Tiffany Square Rehabilitation and Care due to his COPD, Parkinson’s and a knee amputation, he still is “teaching”. He often writes back and forth counseling prisoners. In his younger years, he would often meet with individuals in jail or even invite them to stay at his house to help get them back on their feet.
This year is Jonny’s 50th Class Reunion at Chadron State. He was so excited when he received the invitation, but wasn’t sure if he would be able to make it due to limited mobility. Jessica, Tiffany Square social worker, contacted Dreamweaver Foundation for a little help. After learning about Jonny’s dream, we decided to bring the Chadron State spirit to him! With help from Game Day, the Chadron campus store, Jonny was all set with everything he would need to celebrate Homecoming Weekend from Grand Island. He was decked out in a Chadron State shirt, hat, sweatpants, pennant flag, mug, and a lapel pin to name a few. Chadron State Alumni Office and Foundation shared a link so that Jonny could watch the volleyball and football games. Throughout the weekend, Chadron employees took photos that later Dreamweaver Foundation used to create a photo book.
Thank you Chadron State College, Vetter Senior Living and Tiffany Square for helping us fulfill Jonny’s Dream.
