Janet Rentko was a beloved columnist for the Papillion Times. Prior to her columns in the Papillion Times, she wrote the Senior News column for the Ralston Recorder for 11 years, as well as writing for the Sarpy County Times. Janet told the Dreamweaver Team that her column “is her reason to keep going.” She enjoyed sharing what was going on within the community through her column.
Aside from her involvement with her Senior News column, Janet was an active member of the Ralston Senior Center, volunteering three days a week. And she discovered the La Vista Senior Center, where she enjoyed many activities and events. It was through the La Vista Senior Center that Janet was nominated for a Dream with Dreamweaver Foundation.
Janet grew up in Bronx, New York, and absolutely adored NYC pizza. When the Dreamweaver Team met with Janet, her wish was to have a pizza party with all of her friends at the La Vista Senior Center- specifically from Domino’s Pizza, as it was the closest to true NYC pizza. Unfortunately, Janet’s health declined quickly, and she was not able to have her pizza party. Rather, her friends from the senior center and other community members showered her with cards including hand-drawn pictures from elementary school kids and thoughtful words and memories from her dear friends. Janet was a strong, independent, and intelligent woman who was determined to leave a lasting impact on the Omaha community and her readers- and she did just that!
