Gene was ready to celebrate his big 60th birthday with a bright blue Superman cape flying behind his wheelchair. He was the superhero at his own party. Over 40 friends and family members gathered together to celebrate the man who has been super in their lives in so many ways—Gene.
On one of the coldest days in 2020, Gene and family arrived to the Ralston Senior Center to be welcomed into a decorated, superhero-themed room with cheerful smiles. Dreamweaver volunteers hung banners from the ceiling, set up a photobooth and, most importantly, got the cake table all ready for celebrations.
The family enjoyed a delicious BBQ meal from Dickey’s and then sang to Gene as he blew out his candles on his Marvel Avengers cake from HyVee. As everyone sat down to enjoy their cake, a special guest arrived.
For a little afternoon entertainment, Gene was greeted by Elvis! Joseph Hall, who makes his career as an Elvis impersonator, joined the party. He set up his stage and gave a memorable performance filled with all the classic favorites. His white outfit with bright blue sparkles matched Gene’s superhero cape, and the two were quite the musical pair. Everyone sang and danced with big smiles.
Gene’s party wrapped up with lots of presents from friends and family—most superhero themed. Gene has always admired the action and adventure of each of the superhero characters. They are strong, kind, smart and brave—just like Gene.
It was a wonderful way to spend a birthday, and a special memory made for all who attended.
Thank you to Dickey’s BBQ, Kohll’s wheelchair transportation, HyVee catering, and Joseph Hall as Elvis for making this Dream a reality.
